Blog Assignment #2

Students in Flaum’s class are assigned to write a 5-page story on whatever they wanted. Flaum discusses Nick’s story. This story is about a tiger who is constantly trying to escape from a zoo only to find that every time he successfully escapes, he winds up back in another cage in a different zoo. The story continues with this tiger always escaping and always ending up in another cage. Nick doesn’t end the story. This is to show that every single of us is trapped in our own “cages” and instead of trying to escape, we should accept it and continue living.

"Don't You Remember" by Adele is one song that has a lot of influence in my life. A lot of times, I play this song when I am having trouble getting work done for some of my classes. I have never been in love, which is a concept the song discusses, but the simple lyrics, "Don't You Remember" help me to remember why I am doing what I am doing. It helps me think about why I need to do my work and work hard on specific class projects. It's because I am trying to do what I love, which is to go off to Hollywood and be an actress. It's also metaphorical to when I will be doing what I love again which is acting. The beginning of the song starts off with the lyrics, "when will I see you again? You left with no goodbyes, not a single word was said". This speaks to me because I have not performed in any musicals or videos since I left for college and the beginning line definitely makes me think about when I am going to get those types of opportunities again. The song then transitions into, "I know I have a fickle heart, and a bitterness". This line particularly sticks out to me because fickle means, "likely to change". I feel like in any walk of life, people can identify with that lyric. At anytime, people know that they can have a change of heart and it's nice to have a song that those people can identify with. For me particularly, this song reminds me that, should my hearts desires change, it's okay and it's very normal. Those sorts of changes happen with people everyday and sometimes it's hard to remember that because one is not talking with these people everyday finding out why they changed their mind and what happened once it changed. To know that a top recording artist like Adele has those sorts of thoughts and feelings even once in her life allows all of her listeners to be able to feel closer to her as a person and connect with her on a more personal level. In the second verse, one of her lyrics is, "or have you completely erased me from your memory?" For some odd reason, this line helps me to never forget some of the great things that I have done in my life so far and to remember where I came from. These are the components that could potentially keep me sane when I face so much rejection at first. To keep sane, I have to remember that I have done some really great and satisfying things so far. These particular things made me really happy and that is all that is needed to remember that I really am chasing what I love. This song also has a very slow and soothing tempo, which is very conducive to a creative mind. It helps collect my thoughts so that when they are transferred to some sort of medium, whether that be writing, a drawing,  a computer, etc, the words no longer come out jumbled and confusing, but with grace and precision.
